My current weblog.
Huh huh, he said "Wood"
Today I'm installing Debian GNU/Linux 3.0, aka Woody. I'm not sure which name I dislike more.
Since 1994-ish, about once per year I get the itch to give Linux a try. I'm not sure why, especially since my career has been dedicated to Windows NT since early 1997. Latent masochism perhaps, but these days I use VMware to make things easier.
Like every installation before this one, I have a particular goal in mind: I want to play with Movable Type. I could install it on my web hosting account, but I'd rather have a local installation because it's easier to clean up after. It can probably work with IIS, but for security reasons I don't like having IIS on my workstation, and VM'ing Windows requires too many resources to leave it running constantly. VM'ing Linux is more reasonable.
The installer is running, downloading a ton of packages for me now. I have places to go, hopefully by the time I get back there will be a working Linux installation.
Danger, Danger...
Over at ZDNet, Josh Taylor writes:
I've been playing with the Sidekick, the first Danger-powered hiptop device (yes, that's a play on laptop), which will be available from T-Mobile Wireless (formerly VoiceStream) in late September. Believe it or not, it's actually going to cost $199 with new activation. Monthly service will run $39.95 for unlimited data--yes, you read that right, unlimited data--plus 200 minutes of peak and 1,000 minutes of night and weekend nationwide talk time.
