My current weblog.
Radio Wish: Finer configuration of aggregation frequency.
One thing that sucks about falling behind in Radio's news aggregator: new items will continue to flow in while you're still dealing with the old ones. The "sticky" checkboxes in myRadio help to cope with this problem, but that only goes so far (especially when you have a serious backlog).
I'd like to configure Radio so that it automatically runs the news scan less frequently, perhaps once per day. Coupled with that, I want buttons in the browser to scan immediately and temporarily disable automatic scans.
Where have all the heros gone?
The .NET Guy: "Where are all the Churchills today? Why are we stuck with the Clintons and Traficants?"
I used to have another weblog, and my 9/13/01 entry ended with "Where have all the heros gone?" My father responded that they are the firefighters and rescue workers such as those at the WTC, yada yada, missing my point completely. The next day I followed-up with:
We vilify our potential heros and role-models. The media tears them down, the public eats it up and begs for more. Today there isn't anyone that unites us to achieve a common good. Today we don't have people achieving extraordinary things that awe the nation, just because we can.
My generation doesn't know about putting men on the moon, or the battle for civil rights.
But we do know plenty about our last President's extra-marital affairs.
Back to Churchill, what would he have been without Hitler? Given modern society's appetite for scandal, could Churchill have accomplished anything in today's world (with or without Hitler)? How might Clinton's presidency be judged were he not subjected to modern levels of media and political scrutiny? And for that matter, might Clinton have accomplished more?
We don't have leaders, heros, or role-models today because, as a whole, our society has rejected them.
