Boing Boing Blog: WiFi Humour
On July 4th weekend, while driving to the beach, we passed a giant radio telescope, maybe 100 yards in diameter, and someone in the car said, "Hey, you know, that would make a wicked WiFi antenna."
To which Danny replied, "'That would make a wicked WiFi antenna' is the nerd equivalent of 'That would make a wicked bong.'"
Real World Style: css layouts, tips, tricks, and techniques [via diveIntoMark]
Let’s face it, in the real world there are still a significant number of people using antiquated browsers to surf the web. The Netscape 4 family just celebrated 5 years! I don’t know about you, but in my job upwards of 16% of our visitors are vieweing our site using Netscape 4.x.
On Unix machines.
The site contains a great tip for choosing fonts that will display well under Unix.
Aside: Those pesky Unix people and their ancient browsers, a constant thorn in my side when I was doing web design work for the CMS at my last employer. Mozilla 0.9.3 finally offered the features and (relative) stability required for me to abandon Netscape support.
SJ Merc: Big deals looming in wireless world
A major barrier to consolidation is about to fall as the Federal Communications Commission prepares to lift limits on how much of the cellular airwaves any one carrier can control. The move is expected to trigger a flurry of mergers.
Reiter: Pick a PDA + Phone? What are your choices?
Geoff Goodfellow [...] provided detailed comments about choosing an integrated wireless voice/data device for the U.S. and abroad. Geoff wrote his long e-mail for Prof. David Farber's "interesting people" news group.
Geoff Goodfellow is a wireless data pioneer now living in Prague. Mostly Geoff harps on the multiple US cellular standards and the lack of multi-network phones. Also, as long-time user of the Nokia 9110 Communicator he feels that Nokia has failed to deliver with the new 9200-series -- no GPRS, no USB, no MMS, and it's useless for the jet-set (the US version is single-band GSM1900, the Rest of the World version is dual-band GSM900/1800).
Why the media has no love for Pocket PC Phones
Frank McPherson nails it:
The first problem that I see is in the name, Pocket PC Phone Edition. Despite Microsoft's claims about Pocket PC Phone Edition being "a Pocket PC with phone capabilities" people's expectations are set by the word "Phone" in the name. I think the hardware vendors sense this, which is why HP calls the Jornada 928 a "Wireless Digital Assistant" (WDA). [...]
The second problem is that we have been hearing so much about SmartPhones (aka Stinger) from Microsoft for years, yet not a single SmartPhone has made it to market.
It all comes down to perception, but let's put the blame where it belongs: VoiceStream. They literally named their product "Pocket PC Phone Edition." All of the other PPC PE devices have names that do not emphasize phone capabilities: WDA, xDA, Pocket LOOX.
